About MRSI
The Materials Research Society of India came into existence in February 1989, thanks to the farsighted vision of Prof. C N R Rao. Prof. Rao functioned as the first President and laid the foundation for its impressive growth over the past decade. He was succeeded by Prof. P. Rama Rao, Prof. S. K. Joshi, Dr. R. Chidambaram, Prof D. Chakravorty, Dr. R A Mashelkar and Prof. T. Ramasami and as Past Presidents. Prof. S.B. Krupanidhi serves as the current President of MRSI. MRSI is designed to stimulate an accelerated growth of indigenous research and development of a wide range of materials and their applications through the following objectives:
- To promote active interactions among scientists, technologists, engineers and others engaged in basic or applied research, technology development and transfer, applications and innovations related to structural and functional materials based on metals, alloys, ceramics, polymers, fibres and composites as well as those derived from living and non-living natural resources.
- To encourage wide ranging applications of such materials in all areas of vital interest to human society such as agriculture, food, health, clothing, energy, water, housing and construction, communications, transport, service instruments and controls, consumer goods industry, national security, sports, ecology, environment, safety and thus contribute to societal well-being and prosperity.
- To undertake as well as actively support research and development and innovations in materials.
- To establish information banks and disseminate knowledge on materials through education, training courses, workshops, seminars, symposia, visits, lectures, publications, films and other appropriate means.
- To foster excellence and creativity and provide recognition of significant contributions of individuals, groups and organizations in materials research and their applications.
- To establish national and regional facilities and test centres for research and evaluation of materials and for evolving newer methods of quality assurance for reliability, reproductibility and long term performance and thereby evolve national standards for materials.
- To promote wide public interest in materials development and their potential and in formulation of policies and novel measures appropriate to investments in research, development and exploitation of advances in science and technology of materials for national goals of self-reliance, economic growth and development and exports.
MRSI functions through 19 Regional Chapters and 15 Subject groups. MRSI is supported by individual members and institutions who will be patrons of the society.
MRSI recognizes contributions to materials research through Distinguished Materials Scientist of the year ward, MRSI-ICSC Superconductivity and Materials Science Senior Award. There are number of other prizes including the MRSI Medal Lectures. Every February an annual technical meeting is held. MRSI has been also promoting students’ projects in Materials Science R & D.
The MRSI has been regularly publishing the MRSI Newsletter. This is a quarterly publication. MRSI co-sponsors the publication of Bulletin of Materials Science (BMS) published by the Indian Academy of Sciences. BMS is now available on the web http://www.ias.ac.in/matersci . MRSI is having a website with address http://www.mrsi.org.in. This website offers extensive and useful information on MRSI to members and other interested.
